Diagnosis and management of arthritis in small animals
Principal Tutor: David Bennett BSc BVetMed PhD DSAO FHEA MRCVS
David is a recognised international expert on joint disease in the dog and cat. He has published extensively in this field both in clinical and research journals. He is currently Professor of Small Animal Clinical Studies at the University of Glasgow where he heads the Molecular Medicine and Therapeutic research group. He was recently made an Honorary member of the British Veterinary Orthopaedic Association for outstanding contributions to the field of veterinary orthopaedics and rheumatology
Course content

The course will take the form of structured lectures and interactive case presentations where there will be the opportunity for in depth discussion with the tutor. The lectures will consider the classification of arthritis, synovial fluid collection and examination, osteoarthritis in the dog and cat, immune-based arthritis and infective arthritis. The case presentations will illustrate the diagnostic approach to arthritic cases and the decision making in selecting appropriate treatment.

 

Who should attend; 

Veterinary graduates who wish to improve their knowledge of arthritic diseases affecting dogs and cats.

  • Be able to distinguish different forms of arthritis, based on clinical, radiographical and laboratory features
  • Be able to collect synovial fluid and interpret its laboratory examination
  • Select the appropriate treatment for individual cases of arthritis and know its limitations
  • Have a better understanding of the pathogenesis and pathology of arthritis
