Small Animal Dentistry - six-month modular course for veterinary nurses

Dental disease in small animals represents a large part of the regular caseload. This course will cover dental diagnostics and recording before moving onto specific problems encountered in dogs, cats and small mammals. Delegates will learn how to approach inflammatory and traumatic conditions with confidence. Key practical sessions will enable delegates to practice techniques such as dental prophylaxis and extraction methods in a relaxed environment.

Course content:

Module One

Introduction. Dental anatomy. Dental examination and charting. Radiography

Understanding dental and oral structures. Extra-oral and intra-oral examination. Dental charting. Techniques for intra-oral radiography. Practical: the dental examination, charting and intra-oral radiography

 

Module Two

Periodontal disease

Cause, progression and effect of periodontal disease. Assessment and treatment planning. Effective treatment and prevention regimes. Practical: Correct scaling and polishing including instrument sharpening

 

Module Three

Oral disease in the cat

Feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions (FORLs): recognition and assessment to determine optimal extraction technique. Chronic feline gingivo-stomatitis (PLSC). Oral neoplasia.

 

Module Four

Dental problems in exotic pets

Rabbits: problems with incisor and cheek teeth, current thinking on their cause and prevention and how to treat. Critical care nursing for the dental case. Common dental problems in rodents.

Practical: Dental examination and incisor trimming. Balancing of cheek teeth

 

Module Five

Extraction techniques in cats and dogs

Single rooted teeth including canines and incisors. "Surgical" and "non surgical" approaches. Multiple rooted teeth including the upper carnassial (sectioning teeth). Extracting cat teeth. Avoiding, recognising and dealing with complications. Dental therapeutics. Demonstration: Dog teeth extraction techniques.

 

Module Six

Case-based interactive discussions

A review of commonly encountered dental problems in dogs, cats and exotic animals. Identifying dental pathology, understanding its significance and impact on the patient and knowing when to intervene. Topics such as malocclusions, fractured teeth, worn and discloured teeth, epuli etc
