Module 1

First aid, trauma and wound management, practical fluid therapy

 

• Discuss the priorities in diagnosing and managing horses with acute trauma

• Describe the therapeutic aims in cases with acute musculoskeletal trauma, including haemostasis, wound management and splinting techniques for fractures and soft tissue injuries

• Understand the options available for fluid therapy in the horse and develop protocols for use in practice

 

Module 2

Anaesthesia and analgesia –techniques for the field and hospital, options for sedation, use of NSAIDs and opioids

 

• Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different anaesthetic regimes and techniques, and develop suitable regimes for use in the field and in the hospital environment

• Identify common anaesthetic emergencies / complications, their causes and preventative and therapeutic options

• Discuss the different options for analgesia in equine practice – their advantages and disadvantages, and role of each type of analgesic in providing a rational, balanced approach for different conditions

 

Module 3

Laboratory diagnosis and clinical pathology, including applied techniques, and use of cytology in practice

 

• Discuss the different sampling techniques (including biopsies and cytology), identify the appropriate diagnostic tests for different conditions, and be able to recognise and avoid common errors in technique

• Discuss the applications for and interpretation of cytology in practice

• Describe the diagnostic approach to common conditions

 

Module 4

Abdomen I: Diagnostic techniques. Investigation and treatment options of the acute abdomen

 

• Describe the basic clinical approach to any acute abdominal pain case in the horse, including the various diagnostic techniques

• Understand the basic pathophysiology of acute abdominal pain and the need for urgent action

• Describe the management of acute abdominal pain cases and how/when to refer cases for surgery

• Discuss treatment of benign colic cases 05 Abdomen II: Weight loss, diarrhoea, hepatic and renal disease

• Acute and chronic diarrhoea

 

Module 5

Abdomen 2

• Intestinal causes of weight loss

• Hepatic disease

• Renal disease

 

Module 6

Reproduction – stud management and a review of common problems

 

• Describe the procedure for a complete breeding soundness examination of the mare and stallion including screening for venereal pathogens

• Understand normal breeding management principles including methods of assessing optimal breeding time and diagnosis of pregnancy

• List hormonal methods for manipulation of the cycle

• Describe the principles of diagnosis, treatment and management of common causes of infertility including post-coital endometritis

 

 

Module 7

The cardiovascular system

 

• Understand the diagnostic techniques for cardiovascular disease in the horse (including physical examination, auscultation, ECG and echocardiography)

• Investigation of poor performance

• Understand the common causes of cardiovascular disease in the horse including arrhythmias, mitral valve disease, thrombophlebitis, disorders of the immune system and clotting disorders

• Understand the management and treatment options for the common causes of cardiovascular disease in the horse

 

Module 8 

Upper and lower respiratory tracts

 

• Describe the different diagnostic techniques and their use in the investigation of respiratory disease

• Discuss the approach to common problems including coughing, epistaxis, nasal discharge and respiratory noise

• Understand the management and treatment of common diseases, including sinus disease, guttural pouch disease, disorders of the pharynx and larynx, inflammatory airway disease (COPD, SAOPD) and infectious causes of respiratory disease

 

Module 9

 Lameness I: Approach to a lameness case and diagnostic techniques

 

• Describe a logical approach to any lameness case in the horse

• Discuss how the various parts of the diagnostic armoury are used, how they contribute to the overall picture and their individual advantages and disadvantages

 

Module 10

Lameness II: Review of different conditions and treatment options

 

• Discuss the common lameness problems of the horse including acute and chronic foot pain, back pain and hock lameness

• Discuss the various options for treatment of joint disease

• Understand the basic fractures seen in the horse and their management and prognosis

 

Module 11

Ophthalmology – practical techniques and review of common diseases

 

• Understand the approach to eye cases and how to examine a case properly using simple equipment

• Discuss the normal variations in appearance of the various parts of the eye

• Describe the differential diagnosis of common conditions of the eye such as ocular pain and discharge, blindness and periocular swelling

• Describe the management of common ocular conditions including the use of various therapeutic procedures

 

 

Module 12

Lameness III. Soft tissue orthopaedic injuries including tendon injuries, use of ultrasound and synovial sepsis

 

• Discuss the causes, prevention and treatment of soft tissue musculoskeletal injuries

• Discuss the use of ultrasound for soft tissue musculoskeletal injuries

• Discuss the investigation and treatment of traumatic synovial sepsis

Course Times:

Registration and coffee 9.15am course starts at 9.30am and finishes at 5.00pm each day. In addition,  it is anticipated that a further 10 to 12 hours per month will be required for private further study, reflective learning and structured key skills exercises. 

 

Course notes are provided on the day of each module and are also be available for delegates who are unable to attend a particular module.

a) Payment to Improve for the course:

 

£3874.00 plus VAT (£4551.95 in total at 15% vat, £4551.95 AT 17.5%)

Course fees include all lectures, course notes, refreshments and buffet meals.

b) Payment to ESVPS for the examination:

Delegates will be given detailed information about the examination structure on Module two of their course. This fee will be payable to ESVPS by May 31st 2010. Delegates must not send this payment to Improve when they register for the course itself.
