Course overview:
The diagnosis and management of skin disease represents a major component of small animal practice. The anatomy and physiology of skin will be covered before considering the approach to a dermatological examination and the range of diagnostic tests available. Common clinical presentations will be included, as will both the treatment and management of these conditions. There will be suggested reading between modules and delegates will be asked to contribute to group discussions. At the end of the course the diligent delegate will have a much improved knowledge of Dermatology. Above all, the aim is to encourage further learning.

Module 1

Basic science of skin disease

 

At the end of this module, delegates should be able to:

• Describe the basic structure and functions of the epidermis

• Describe the basic structure and function of hair follicles and variation between sites and species

• Describe the basic structure and function of dermis and subcutis

• Describe the skin response to injury, inflammation and repair

• Describe the basic skin immune system and how it responds to protect or contribute to the development of clinical skin disease

 

Module 2

12th March

Alopecia

 

At the end of this module, delegates should be able to:

• Describe the pathogenesis of alopecia

• Describe the hair cycle and variations between species

• Describe inflammatory causes of alopecia (folliculitides)

• Describe hair structural abnormalities as causes of alopecia (dysplasias)

• Describe abnormalities in hair shaft production

• Outline how to investigate alopecia using a problem-orientated approach

• Discuss management and treatment of alopecia

 

Module 3

9th April

Pruritus

 

At the end of this module, delegates should be able to:

• Describe the causes of pruritus

• Describe the pathogenesis of pruritus

• Outline how to investigate cases of pruritic skin disease using a problemorientated approach

• Describe the treatment and management of pruritic animals

• Describe the causes and discuss the investigation and treatment of scaling and crusting in equines and large animals

• Describe the causes and discuss the investigation and treatment of ulcerative skin in equines and large animals

• Describe the causes and discuss the investigation and treatment of nodular (neoplastic and non-neoplastic) skin disease in equines and large animals

• Outline the causes and discuss the investigation and treatment of hoof and horn disease in equines and large animals

• Describe the causes, investigation and treatment of digital skin disease

• Describe the causes, investigation and treatment of nail disease

 

Module 8

Tumours, discharging sinuses, congenital/ hereditary dermatoses and nutritional disease

 

At the end of this module, delegates should be able to:

• Describe the causes of nodular skin disease

• Describe the causes of sinus tracts

• Describe the pathogenesis of skin nodules and discharging sinuses

• Outline how to investigate cases of nodules and discharging sinuses using a problem-orientated approach

• Describe the treatment and management of nodules and sinus tracts in animals

• Describe skin diseases due to nutritional problems

• Describe genodermatoses seen in domestic animals

At the end of these modules, delegates should be able to:

• Describe how to investigate and treat cases of pruritus using a problem solving approach

• Describe how to investigate and treat cases of alopecia using a problem solving approach

• Describe how to investigate and treat cases of crusting and scaling using a problem solving approach

• Describe how to investigate and treat cases of pustular skin disease using a problem solving approach

• Describe how to investigate and treat cases of ulcerative skin disease using a problem solving approach

• Describe how to investigate and treat cases of neoplastic using a problem solving approach

• Describe how to investigate and treat cases of nodules and discharging sinuses using a problem solving approach

At the end of these modules, delegates should be able to:

• Describe how to use cytology for the investigation of skin disease

• Describe how to use skin scraping and hair examination for the investigation of skin disease

• Describe how to use biopsy and histopathology for the investigation of skin disease

• Describe how to use haematology, clinical chemistry and serology for the investigation of skin disease
