Course outline

Diseases affecting the lower respiratory tract of the horse and pony are very common and diverse. Some are a cause of low grade coughing or loss of performance whilst others can cause serious illness and even death. They affect all types and ages of animal and are a major cause of economic loss in the athletic equine. In the last 10 years a huge amount of scientific research has been undertaken into the aetiology and pathophysiology of some of the important diseases of the lower tract and as such this has lead to a better understanding as to how we might deal with these cases clinically. Some diseases have been re-defined or renamed whilst others have been discovered. In recent years there has also been considerable change in the way we treat and manage some of these diseases.

This course is designed to help veterinarians to gain the very latest ideas and information on the most important diseases of the lower respiratory tract of the horse and pony, including their aetiology, identification, treatment and prognosis. Extra time will be available after lectures for discussion and delegates will be encouraged to interact fully with tutors throughout the course and especially in the case based open discussion. The combined talents and practical experiences of a group of practice and university-based equine clinicians, of vast experience in this field, along with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, will stimulate delegates to assimilate knowledge on, and to discuss, the diagnosis and most effective treatment of the various lower respiratory tract disorders in the horse and pony.
