Equine lameness: Some aspects of hindlimb lameness in the horse

Dr Graham Munroe BVSc(Hons) PhD CertEO DESM DipECVS FRCVS (RCVS recognised Specialist in Equine Surgery)

 

Graham qualified from the University of Bristol with honours in 1979 and spent eight years in equine practice in Wendover, Newmarket, Arundel, and Oxfordshire, including a stud season in New Zealand. Whilst in practice, he studied for and gained CertEO and DESM from RCVS. Graham joined Glasgow University in 1987 as a Lecturer in Equine Surgery and Reproduction and obtained a PhD by thesis on Neonatal Foal Ophthalmology and Fellowship of the RCVS by examination in 1994. He then moved to Edinburgh as a Senior Lecturer in Large Animal Surgery in 1994. He obtained the DipECVS in 1997 by examination and he has set up a private equine consultancy practice based in Scottish Borders in 1998. He consults in clinics in Scotland and Northern England, and occasionally in Europe.

  • Digital sheath problems and other lower limb soft tissue injuries
  • Proximal suspensory ligament desmitis Intertarsal joint osteoarthritis
  • Hindlimb osteochondrosis
  • Other causes of stifle lameness
  • Hindlimb gait abnormalities

Any clinician involved with horses in mixed or equine practice who is looking to increase their knowledge of the very common problem of hindlimb lameness. Suitable for candidates enrolled on RCVS certificates in equine practice.

  • Increase their knowledge of the more common causes of hindlimb lameness
  • Highlight the types of treatment presently available and their likely success rate

  • Approach to the diagnosis of hindlimb lameness
  • Understanding of the main soft tissue injuries in the hindlimb
  • How to diagnose and treat intertarsal joint osteoarthritis
  • The manifestations of osteochondrosis in the equine hindlimb
  • The increasing importance of stifle related lameness
