Exclusively Equine - Endoscopy in the horse

Most clinical practices have an endoscope of varying types and sizes used mainly for upper respiratory tract investigations. With the introduction of smaller and longer endoscopes the range of uses has increased considerably as has been recognised recently by the vast increase in gastroscopy. In addition, laser surgery has been established as an important tool in the treatment of upper respiratory tract and reproductive problems. Technology continues to advance with the introduction of mobile systems that can be attached to the horse during exercise. This course, using a mixture of highly illustrated lectures, case-based discussions, and video/picture quizzes is designed to show clinicians the whole range of conditions and systems that can be examined by endoscopy. The normal and abnormal endoscopic appearance of structures will be visually demonstrated and the way endoscopy fits into the overall approach to cases is discussed. The day is intended to be relaxed, informal and very interactive with plenty of discussion time available.

Specific areas to be covered include:

• Equipment and its care

• The upper and lower respiratory tracts

• Gastrointestinal tract

• Urinary tract

• Reproductive tract
