Friday morning

Welcome and introduction.

Seminars: Cardiovascular system – the approach to the cardiac case. Heart murmurs and arrhythmias. Practical sessions: Auscultation of the heart. The electrocardiogram. Videos of ultrasound exam of heart. Case discussions.

 

Friday afternoon

Seminars: Dentistry – the approach to the dental case.

Practical sessions: Instrumentation. Mouth examination and use of gags, rasps, mirrors and probes on cadaver heads. Examination of live horses mouths.

 

Saturday morning

Seminars: Ocular therapeutics – the principles of eye medication. Practical advice of using the right drugs for treating ophthalmic disease.

Practical sessions: Regional nerve blocks. Temporary tarsorrhaphy. Subpalpebral lavage system insertion. Third eyelid removal. Corneal ulcer debridement. Enucleation. Examination of the equine eye in live horse.

 

Saturday afternoon

Seminars: The approach to nasal discharge and coughing in the horse.

Practical sessions: Review of endoscopy videos of normal and clinical cases. Video review of broncheolar lavage (BAL), tracheal wash and radiography of the chest. Case discussions. Topographical anatomy of the equine head. Sinuscopy. Catheter placement. Head X-ray film reading.

 

Sunday morning

Seminars: Approach to lameness examination. Regional nerve blocks.

Practical sessions: Regional nerve blocks. Intra-articular blocks and taps. Review of lameness videos.

 

Sunday afternoon

Seminars: Radiology of the foot, distal limb and hock.

Practical sessions: X-ray film reading. Ultrasonography of dead limbs. Examination of ultrasound images. Case discussions.

Key Learning Objectives:
This highly innovative and interactive course will appeal to veterinary surgeons keen to improve their understanding of equine practical techniques. The programme will involve short lectures, illustrated with photographs and video material of clinical cases, plus 'wet lab' sessions, and non-invasive procedures on live horses.
