Course content

This three-day course is designed for those vets with a little prior knowledge of the use of ultrasound in small animals. During the three days, delegates will learn how to use ultrasound to diagnose many conditions affecting the abdomen and the thorax of the dog and cat. The normal anatomy of the abdominal organs and heart will be reviewed along with pathological processes and how these influence the ultrasonographic appearance of these organs. The course will involve short, review-type lectures followed by ‘hands-on’ scanning where delegates can practise their scanning techniques.

Key Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, delegates should have a thorough understanding of:

• Machine/patient set up, image recording and recognition of artefacts

• Ultrasound of the abdominal organs including liver/biliary tract, spleen, gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, adrenal glands, kidney, ureters/bladder, prostate and reproductive tract

• Ultrasound of the thorax including two-dimensional echocardiography, M-mode echocardiography, colour-flow Doppler, echocardiographic measurements and echocardiographic diagnosis of acquired disease

• Ultrasound-guided invasive procedures

• How to develop ultrasound skills in practice
