Update in Small Animal Cardiology - How to live with a broken heart
Two-day non-practical course
Principal Tutor: John Sauvage BA (Hons) BVet Med Cert SAC MRCVS
John qualified from the Royal Veterinary College and is now a senior partner in Pierson Stewart & Partners, a six Veterinary Surgeon practice in Cranbrook, Kent with four other local branches seeing both cardiac and dental referrals as well as first opinion cases. In 1987 John obtained an Honours Degree from the Open University in History and Philosophy and then went on while still in fulltime practice to obtain a Certificate in Small Animal Cardiology in 1990. John was the first cardiologist to offer an ECG fax referral service and regularly receives ECGs from as far afield as Saudi Arabia. He has lectured in all parts of the UK, Republic of Ireland as well as in the USA, Australia and Norway.
Course content:

Why is it that experienced veterinary general practitioners fear the simple ECG Machine and leave it to gather dust and feel that only specialist cardiologists are capable of using an ultrasound machine?

The course will be case based with over 20 real cases showing that with correct diagnosis and balanced treatment together with owner empowerment, survival time can be prolonged with even the most severe cardiac disease in both dogs and cats.

The practical use of diagnostic aids such as ECG and Ultrasound will be discussed in such a way as to remove the fear factor of using and interpreting the findings from these underused diagnostic aids.

The practical benefit will be translated into an easy to follow therapeutic regime which puts to bed the Pimobendan or ACE inhibitor dilemma and makes the therapeutic decisions not only logical but obvious and sensible.

Key Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, delegates should have a thorough understanding of:

  • How to do a full cardiac work up
  • The value of a full physical examination after noting relevant history and signalment
  • The correct interpretation of radiographic, electrocardiographic and echocardiographic findings
  • Diagnosing the congenital and acquired heart diseases of the dog and cat
  • Cardiac therapeutics including the ACE Inhibitor versus Pimobendan debate
