Common behavioural problems
Management of problems in the dog and cat
Principal Tutor: Samantha Lindley BVSc MRCVS
Samantha qualified from Bristol Vet School in 1988, Interned at Glasgow and spent four years in mixed practice before four years as behavioural consultant at The Animal Behaviour Centre, Chertsey. Since 1997 Samantha has run pain management and behaviour clinics at Glasgow and Edinburgh Vet Schools. Her main interests are clinical causes of behaviour problems, acupuncture, chronic pain management and the welfare of captive wild animals.
Course content:

Veterinarians are exposed to the behaviour problems of their patients on a daily basis. Sometimes these are as obvious as being threatened or attacked by a frightened or belligerent dog; often the subject is introduced in a more cryptic manner by the client. Sometimes, the first we know of a problem is the request for euthanasia. Dealing with such problems can feel like opening the proverbial can of worms, yet the veterinary practice ought to be the first port of call for worried owners.

This course will not only consider how to deal with common behavioural problems but will also discuss how the whole practice can become involved in the effort to reform and help the behavioural patient.

Key Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, delegates should have a thorough understanding of:

  • How behaviour problems can arise
  • How the practice can work together to help both client and patient
  • The principles of dealing with anxiety with specific examples
  • The principles of dealing with aggression with specific examples
  • The first aid management for commonly presented problems
