Gastrointestinal problems in the pet rabbit
Principal Tutor: Ian Sayers BVSc CertZooMed MRCVS
Ian qualified from Liverpool in 1992 and has since worked in mixed practice, undertaken research work on cheetahs in the Serengeti and spent a period as a locum vet. In 2001 he joined the University of Bristol Veterinary School helping to set up and run the UK’s first rabbit only referral service. He lectures and supervises the Rabbit Welfare Fund Rabbit and Zoological Medicine Resident.
Course content:

 

Rabbits are the third most popular pet in the UK. The aims of this course are to help dispel the myth that “there’s not much we can do with rabbits”. Many rabbits present with gastrointestinal tract or related dietary problems. This course will consider the whole of the alimentary system, in order to assess how best to treat problems effectively and how to prevent them initially. This course will discuss the best approach to ileus treatment and its prevention during the peri-anaesthetic period.

By the end of this course, delegates should have a thorough understanding of the radiographic techniques required to demonstrate certain:

 

• Rabbit digestive anatomy and physiology

• The rabbits unusual calcium metabolism

• Underlying causes of perineal soiling

• Causes of ileus and its’ treatment

• Realistic aims for dental disease management

• Management and prevention of diet and gut related problems
