How to perform difficult tooth extractions in the dog - A one-day practical course
A one-day practical course for Veterinary Surgeons
Principal Tutor: Bob Partridge BVM&S MRCVS
Bob is the Principal of the Oak Beck Veterinary Hospital in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. His special interest is dentistry and he has concentrated in this field for nearly 20 years. Course content:

There are dentals that everyone fears - the complex extractions of the big multi-rooted teeth. These provide intense anxiety for the new graduate to the experienced vet. With poor technique they can result in massive trauma to the patient, leading to pain and a dissatisfied client. They can take far longer than anyone wants leading to stressed vets and an inability to charge properly for the time. Whilst a little sweat is almost inevitable, hopefully good technique and surgical options can reduce the stress to a minimum. Good technique means happier patients and happier clients - it is also something that can be charged for properly. The course will consist of a mix of short review lectures, followed by "hands-on" practical sessions.

Key Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, delegates should have a thorough understanding of the following:

  • Practical dental anatomy and an understanding of tooth attachment
  • Instruments, their proper usage and maintenance
  • Common tooth extractions and the role of radiography
  • Challenging tooth extractions - Flaps etc. - without getting into a flap!
  • What to do when it all goes wrong
