Course outline:

Abnormalities of the axial skeleton are one of the most important sources of lameness in all types of horse and pony. In addition they can be responsible for changes in performance, behaviour problems, and neurological abnormalities.

For many years they have been an area of problems much frequented by ‘alternative medicine’ practitioners. With the advent of more advanced imaging modalities, such as scintigraphy and high quality digital radiography, and the continuing research interest in these groups of conditions the veterinary profession is regaining some input into these clinical problems. In the last 10 years a number of new conditions have been discovered including various stress fractures, articular facet disease in the neck and back, and supraspinous and dorsal sacroiliac ligament damage. Improvements in treatment modalities and a better understanding of the long term management and prognosis of some of these problems is starting to emerge

.

This course is designed to help veterinarians to gain the very latest ideas on the aetiology, identification, treatment and prognosis of the common problems of the neck, back, pelvis and hip in the horse and pony. Extra time will be available after lectures for discussion and delegates will be encouraged to interact fully with tutors in the case based and open discussions. In addition, there will be imaging quizzes, practical demonstrations of ultrasonography of the neck, back, pelvis and hip, and tutor lead live and video examinations of clinical cases.

The combined talents and practical experiences of a group of university-based and practice equine clinicians, of vast experience in this field, along with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, will stimulate delegates to assimilate knowledge on, and to discuss, these very important clinical problems in the horse and pony.
