Feline Orthopaedics - A review of feline orthopaedic problems

Sorrel Langley-Hobbs graduated from The Royal Veterinary College where she also completed a Residency in Small Animal Orthopaedics. She has both the RCVS Diploma in Small Animal Surgery (Orthopaedics) and ECVS Diploma in Small Animal Surgery. She is currently University Surgeon in Small Animal Orthopaedics at Cambridge University and has a strong interest in feline orthopaedics.

Course content

Due to the independent lifestyle and increasing popularity of cats as pets, fractures and other injuries are not uncommon. There is therefore an increasing need for veterinary surgeons to be able to recognise and address problems that are sometimes specific to the cat.

 

Who should attend

This course is aimed at veterinary surgeons with either or both an interest in small animal surgery and an interest in cats. The course will try and introduce some simple techniques for management of certain feline fractures as well as advising on the repair options for more complicated cases.

 

What the course will help the attendees to do

The aim of this course is to address some common orthopaedic problems in the cat paying particular attention to

• Practical management of specific feline fractures

• Repair options for more complicated injuries

• Recognition and management of other feline orthopaedic disease

• Species differences between cats and dogs

• Feline specific implantation and instruments

Key Learning Objectives

 

By the end of this course delegates should have a thorough understanding of:

 

• Recognition of non-fracture causes of lameness in cats

• Principles of the use of ESF in feline fracture repair

• An introduction to the use of interlocking nailing

• How to manage feline skull injuries

• Increased understanding on the management options of feline fractures.
