How to carry out emergency techniques in small animal practice

Simon is a graduate of the University of Cambridge and after qualifying spent two year in small animal practice. He then under took a residency at the University of Bristol in Small Animal Medicine and Intensive Care and gained the European Diploma in Small Animal Medicine in 2008. He is currently working at Dick White Referrals, where he sees cases through all areas of small animal medicine, but still maintains a keen interest in emergency medicine.

Course summary
The course will cover the approach and stabilisation of the emergency medical patient. Practical techniques will be covered in detail, both in a case based lecture format and in a practical wet lab session. Techniques covered in detail will include vascular access techniques, chest drainage and pericardiocentesis. Nutritional support for critical cases will be discussed as will the practical aspects of choosing which feeding tube to use and how to place it. A practical approach to cardiopulmonarycerebral resuscitation will also be covered.

This course aims to give delegates confidence to deal with the common emergencies seen in small animal practice. It is suitable for all practitioners who see emergency cases who would like to improve their understanding of emergency medicine.

• Approach emergency situations with confidence

• Be able to utilize a range of vascular access techniques such as central lines and intra osseous catheters

• Be familiar with a range of diagnostic techniques such as diagnostic peritoneal lavage and how to interpret results

• Have practical experience with emergency procedures such as chest drain placement, tracheostomy and pericardiocentesis

• Have confidence to place a variety of enteral feeding tubes
