Practical emergency skills for the small animal nurse

Dan qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 1991. He has spent nearly all of his professional life involved in anaesthesia, emergency medicine and intensive care in small animals in both academia and private practice. Since 2005 he has worked in his own firstopinion and referral practice in Somerset.
Course content
Small animal accident and emergency medicine is a discipline that hinges on effective teamwork. Nurses are crucial team members as they can anticipate the patient’s needs, recognise acute changes before they become crises and provide effective primary care. This course will focus on the skills nurses need in patient assessment, stabilisation, monitoring and crisis intervention.

Who should attend

This course will be aimed primarily at nurses working in emergency clinics, but will be suitable for all qualified nurses in small animal practice.

• Recognise the true emergency

• Perform effective primary surveys

• Provide suitable primary care for the dyspnoeic patient

• Assess the patient’s haemodynamic status

• Perform effective monitoring and learn when to intervene

• Recognition and primary management of immediately life-threatening conditions

• Oxygen therapy and its indications
