Emergency Care of Rabbits and Small Mammals

Simon Girling BVMS(Hons) DZooMed CBiol MIBiol MRCVS is an RCVS Recognised Specialist in Zoo & Wildlife Medicine. He has worked in first opinion and referral centres for exotic pets, zoo and wildlife. Simon has also worked as Senior Veterinary Surgeon at Glasgow, then Edinburgh Vets Now Ltd Clinics where he furthered his interest in emergency and critical care of exotic animals.
Course content:
This course will cover emergency procedures such as CPR, medications and surgery such as tracheostomy tube placement necessary to stabilise the crashing pet rabbit or small mammal. It will also cover some of the clinical techniques, including imaging and clinical pathology, helpful in the rapid diagnosis of the critically sick rabbit or small mammal patient.

The course will be of help to everyone from first opinion clinicians and technical staff through to clinicians from more specialised exotic practices as well as anyone providing out of hours emergency cover for rabbits and other small mammals

 

What the course will help the attendees to do

  • Perform effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation in rabbits and small mammals
  • Know what drugs to give and when to administer them to emergency crashing rabbits and small mammals
  • Know what diagnostic tests are of use in critically ill rabbits and small mammals and how to interpret them
  • Understand how to continue stabilisation and care of the critically ill rabbit or small mammal after initial resuscitation

  • How to perform effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation in rabbits and small mammals
  • How to perform tracheostomy and intubation of rabbits
  • How to interpret clinical pathology and diagnostic imaging results from critical care rabbit and small mammal cases
  • Understand what drugs should form part of the typical crash trolley for rabbits and small mammals and when to use them
  • Calculate fluid and nutritional supplement rates of administration for rabbits and small mammals
