The Senior Cat - Older and Wiser

Samantha Taylor graduated from the RVC in 2002 and after an Internship at Davies Veterinary Specialists, a period in small animal general practice and Dick White Referrals she became the Feline Advisory Bureau Resident at Bristol University in 2006. She holds the RCVS certificate in Small Animal Medicine and hopes complete her ECVIM Diploma this year.
Course content
Cats are now living longer and overtaking dogs in popularity. The course will cover the most common conditions of geriatric cats, using a case based approach, including; endocrine disease (hypertension, diabetes mellitus), chronic renal failure, hypertension, intestinal disease (IBD and lymphoma included) and osteoarthritis. The course aims to discuss the diagnosis and practical management of these conditions as well as providing the attendee with information on general care of geriatric cats.

Who should attend

General practitioners wanting to improve or update their knowledge of the diseases affecting geriatric cats, and those with an interest in feline medicine in general. Practitioners considering developing senior cat clinics will also benefit from this course as will those studying for further qualifications in small animal medicine.

 

What the course will help the attendees to do

• Diagnose and treat challenging diabetics and hyperthyroid cats

• Identify and treat hypertensive cats

• Investigate and treat older cats with vomiting, diarrhoea and /or weight loss

• Manage the cat with chronic renal failure

• Diagnose and effectively manage osteoarthritis in geriatric cats

• Understand management of unstable diabetic cats

• Understand all treatment options for hyperthyroidism and which to use when

• Improve ability to diagnose and treat various intestinal diseases

• Improve management of chronic renal failure with information from latest research

• Improve identification and treatment of hypertensive cats

• Improve identification and treatment of cats with osteoarthritis
