Course outline

Ultrasonography has now developed into one of the most important diagnostic imaging modalities that are used in the horse and pony. Many mixed and equine practices now have access to very good ultrasound machines and the quality of the images, and the mobility of the machines, continues to improve year on year. The thorax and abdomen are areas of the equine where the clinician can increasingly gain information about a whole range of conditions using ultrasonography. Although some of the techniques and interpretations are only suitable for specialists there is much that can be undertaken by clinicians in practice, especially in pleural and abdominal diseases.

The course is designed to help veterinarians to gain experience in ultrasonography of the heart, thorax and abdomen using a mixture of highly practical and visual short lectures, case based seminars and practical hands-on scanning of horses and ponies.

The number of delegates attending the course will be limited to maximise their exposure to the material and the tutors. The combined talents and practical experiences of 3 highly talented, practice and university- based equine clinicians, along with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, will stimulate delegates to assimilate theoretical and practical knowledge in this developing area of diagnostic imaging.

Specific areas to be covered include:

• Ultrasonography of the heart

• Ultrasonography of the thoracic cavity

• Ultrasonography of the abdominal cavity
