One-day workshop course

Course outline

Veterinary physiotherapy treatments have been readily available for many decades and are used extensively in treating a whole range of problems in the horse and pony. Their professional use has been enhanced by the formation of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Animal Therapy (ACPAT) who maintain a register of qualified physiotherapists and run courses and educational programmes. Although the range of expertise is readily available many veterinary surgeons are still unaware of when to involve a physiotherapist in the treatment of a case and what problems can be treated by these skilled professionals.

This day course is intended to bring together veterinary surgeons and physiotherapists to discuss the use of physiotherapy not only in treating cases but also in the prevention of injury and the enhancement of equine performance. The day is intended to be relaxed, informal and very interactive with plenty of discussion time available. Delegates are asked to bring along cases which they feel may benefit from the use of physiotherapy and to use these in the open discussion session in the afternoon. All the tutors have a wealth of practical knowledge gained from working in busy equine practice and referral clinics.

Specific areas to be covered include:

• A physiotherapist’s approach to examination and assessment of a case

• Overview of available physiotherapy techniques and their uses

• The use of physiotherapy techniques in veterinary treatment of horses: The axial skeleton Limbs incl. joints, tendons, muscles and ligaments Wounds and trauma

• Rehabilitation after surgery and injury

• The use of physiotherapy techniques in keeping the equine athlete fit to compete

Course Format

One day workshop course using highly illustrated lectures, case based and open discussion groups.
