Course Content
This course will aim to provide the general practitioner with a greater understanding of British wildlife medicine and surgery. It will deal with common mammals, birds and reptiles found in the UK. It will cover the following aspects relating to each species:
• Common diseases of the skin, respiratory tract, digestive tract, urogenital tract, cardiovascular system and nervous system and their therapies.
• Common diseases associated with poor nutrition and poisoning and their therapies.
• Diagnostic testing including imaging, haematology, faecal and biochemistry analysis
• Modalities of wildlife therapeutics
• Release techniques and assessments of suitability to release and suitability of release sites
Key Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, delegates should be able to:
• Understand the legal and ethical aspects of British wildlife medicine and surgery
• Understand the objectives of treatment
• Perform an initial assessment and give first-aid treatment to the commonly encountered wildlife species
• Perform a clinical examination and manage common disorders seen in the commonly encountered wildlife species
• Understand the principles of wildlife anaesthesia and fluid therapy
• Understand the important health and safety considerations relating to the veterinary care of wildlife |
