Course Content
There are over 400 licensed zoos in the UK; the vast majority of these are serviced by vets in general practice. This course therefore will focus on aspects useful to those not providing a full time service to a local zoo, wildlife or safari park. Aspects covered will include legislation, which the zoo vet should be aware of (Balai, implementation of Zoo Licence requirements, Secretary of States Standards of Modern Zoo Practice, Rabies and bird quarantine requirements). A first line approach to ‘zoo specific’ species - primates, hoofstock, big cats and zoo birds will be outlined with the principles of anaesthesia, reproductive management, preventative medicine in these zoo species. This course is intended to be as useful as possible; delegates are encouraged to bring their own case material and interaction during the sessions is welcome but not compulsory.
