This course has been developed following close discussion with veterinary surgeons who already have a good, working knowledge of the subject and who are looking for CPD events more tailored to their needs. This knowledge may have been gained by studying for a RCVS Certificate or attending previous relevant CPD events. All of the modules will be led by acknowledged experts in their field and you can be confident that the material will be truly ‘cutting edge’. You can chose to attend the entire series of ten

 modules or select individual modules of interest from the series.

 

Modules and Key Learning Objectives:

Module No. 1

Title: Surgical conditions of the canine elbow

- Understanding the pathogenesis of common elbow pathology

- Improving understanding of conventional and advanced diagnostic techniques used in the investigation of  elbow disease

- A review of the surgical treatment options available for use in the elbow

- A discussion in more depth of some common surgical techniques

- A review of the prognosis following surgical and conventional treatment of common elbow pathology

 

Module No. 2

Title: The approach to the acute abdomen

- The approach to abdominal crisis in the dog

- The decision making process in selecting cases for surgery

- Interpreting abdominal radiographs to assist in the decision making process

- The techniques used in emergency gastro-intestinal surgery and the rationale for variations in methods

- Designing a protocol for the management of GDV in the practice

 

Module No. 3

Title: Pelvic trauma in the dog

- Developing a thorough knowledge of pelvic anatomy

- Understanding when fractures should be managed conservatively or by surgery

- Options available to treat pelvic fractures surgically

- Recognising the complications of pelvic injuries

Title: Latest development in spinal surgery in the dog

- Using advanced imaging techniques in spinal diseases

- Decision making in spinal trauma

- Different options to stabilize spinal fractures

- Update on disc and lumbosacral disease

- Uncommon vertebral malformations

 

Module No. 5

Title: Latest developments in the diagnosis and management of cranial cruciate ligament rupture in the dog

- Review of the anatomy and pathophysiology

- Diagnosis of partial and full cranial cruciate ligament tears

- Treatment of meniscal injuries

- Options for surgical treatment including TPLO, TTA, Closing wedge osteotomy, and a range of other techniques

- Surgical complications and how to avoid them

 

Module No. 6

Title: Ear surgery in the dog and cat

- Revision of the surgical anatomy of the dog and cat

- Indications for ear surgery in both the dog and cat

- Overview of the surgeries for external ear canal

- Middle ear surgeries in detail

- ventral bulla osteotomy and total canal ablation

- Common complications and how to avoid them

 

Module No. 7

Title: The approach and surgical management of the acute trauma case

Don Sheahan BVSc BSc CertSAS MRCVS

 

- Initial evaluation and stabilisation of the trauma patient

- Diagnostics of the trauma patient. What can you do and when

- Current thinking on the surgical management of these cases

- Advanced surgical procedures: how to avoid some of the more common pitfalls

- Case based discussion highlighting a few tricks of the trade

 

Module No. 8

Title: Recent developments in ophthalmic surgery in the dog and cat

John Mould BVSc BA DVOphthal MRCVS

 

- The design and correct use of microsurgical instruments

- The use of magnification in the form of loupes and operating microscopes

- The range of techniques for replacement of the eyelid margin, including sliding skin grafts, the mustarde technique and the lip to lid procedure

- A review of types of corneal repair and reconstruction, including direct suturing, conjunctival grafts and corneo-conjunctival transposition

- The principles of intra-ocular surgery, including viscoelastics, irrigating solutions and methods of lens extraction

 

Module No. 9

Title: Rabbit and rodent surgery

- To appreciate anatomic peculiarities and confidently perform aural surgery in the rabbit

- To be aware of a range of surgical options for surgical tooth removal and abscess treatment

- To be aware of anatomical peculiarities, indications and complications of genital tract surgery and surgical options for common urological conditions

- To be aware of the indications for and implications of gastrointestinal tract surgery

- To be aware of differences in the approach to the rabbit orthopaedic case

 

Module No. 10

Title: Endoscopic surgical techniques

- Basic principles of laparoscopy and thoracoscopy

- Laparoscopic biopsy techniques (liver, kidney, pancreas, full thickness bowel, lymph node)

- Laparoscopic assisted cystoscopy

- Exploratory thoracoscopy

– approaches and biopsy techniques

- Pericardectomy by VATS (visually assisted thoracoscopic surgery)
