A beginners guide to the use of external fixation in small animal practice
Principal Tutor: James Pratt BVetMed DipECVS CertSAS MRCVS
James completed a three year Residency in Small Animal Surgery at the University of Edinburgh in 2000, becoming a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2001. Since then he has worked in private referral practice seeing orthopaedic and neurosurgical cases. He currently works at the Animal Medical Centre near Rotherham and for Peak Referrals based in the Sheffield area.
Course content:
External fixation is a versatile and cost -effective method of repairing a wide variety of fractures in the dog and cat. This two-day course is suitable for both the orthopaedic beginner and those with limited experience of orthopaedic surgery and will be highly practical. Short lectures will cover the theoretical aspects of external fixation. The basics of frame selection and application will be learnt on plastic pipes before moving on to more realistic repairs on cadaver limbs.

Who should attend;

 

This is beginner's course for all small animal surgeons who wish to improve their skills repairing fractures. Previous orthopaedic experience is not required. The emphasis on practical exercises should give all delegates the confidence to use external fixation as a routine part of their surgical practice.

 

What the course will help the attendees to do:

  • Properly plan the fracture repair
  • Treat common fractures of the radius/ulna and tibia
  • Use fixators to augment pin and tension band repairs of the humerus and femur
  • Treat mandibular fractures
  • Deal with open fractures
  • Avoid complications by the use of modern techniques and implants

By the end of this course delegates should have a thorough understanding of:

 

  • The various components used to create external fixators
  • Fracture forces and how to neutralise them with external fixation
  • Practical techniques for the application of external fixators
  • The common complications and how to deal with them.
