Current interest in small animal accident and emergency medicine and surgery is greater now than ever before. This exciting modular course is dedicated to providing high quality, relevant, clinically useful information for the small animal practitioner.

 

Information that is practically relevant is presented using an approach based around the major organ systems. Interactive discussions and clinical case material will be used to highlight important elements in successful patient management. This course will be of immense value to all veterinary surgeons and particularly those who see emergency cases as part of their regular workload.

Approach to the emergency patient

Preparation for the emergency, drugs and equipment, primary patient assessment and recognition of life-threatening disorders, secondary survey: major body system evaluation and laboratory assessment of the emergency

Anaesthesia, analgesia and monitoring

Drugs and the emergency patient, sedation versus anaesthesia, induction and maintenance, monitoring equipment and techniques and analgesia – drugs and techniques

April 23rd

Emergency surgery

The surgical abdomen, trauma: the surgeon’s perspective, acute wound management and general trauma

May 28th

Ophthalmic emergencies

Ophthalmic examination, ocular trauma, the red eye, acute blindness and acute medicine and surgery of the

June 25th

Neurologic emergencies 

Neurologic assessment and lesion localisation, seizures and SE, acute vestibular disease, altered consciousness, paraplegia and tetraplegia and head trauma and spinal cord trauma

July 30th

Respiratory distress

Examination, recognition and stabilisation, respiratory disorders requiring surgery, pleural and chest wall disorders, pulmonary parenchymal disorders and upper and lower airway disorders

August 27th

Shock & haemodynamic support

Assessment of tissue perfusion, pathophysiology of shock, vascular access, fluid selection and administration and haemodynamic monitoring

October 1st

Cardiac emergencies

Cardiovascular assessment, acute CHF, thromboembolic disease, arrhythmias, cardiac drugs and cardiopulmonary-cerebral resuscitation

 

 

09 and 10

October 29th and 30th

Two-day case-based session

Delegates to discuss emergency scenarios and expand upon taught modules, plus discussion of topics not covered by taught modules. Delegates encouraged to bring own cases.

 

 

11 and 12

November 26th and 27th

Two-day practical session

Procedures to include tracheotomy, intraoseous access, central venous access, thoracocentesis, chest drain placement and emergency thoracotomy
