Soft tissue orthopaedic injuries are common in all types of horse and pony whatever their use or level of activity. Many lead to long periods of convalescence before the animal can be returned to work and other cases can be career or even life threatening.
In recent years considerable research has been published into the structure and physiology of many of these structures and from this have evolved better ways of treating injuries with accompanying improvement in prognoses. With new forms of diagnostic imaging such as MRI, and improved access to high quality ultrasonography, a whole range of new injuries have been identified and many of which are now undergoing study, with hopefully better treatments to come in the future. Finally, with an ever ageing population of horses and ponies increasing numbers of injuries which appear related to age degeneration of soft tissue structures are beginning to be identified and investigated.
This course is designed to help veterinarians to gain the very latest ideas on soft tissue orthopaedic injuries, including their aetiology, identification, treatment and prognosis. Extra time will be available after lectures for discussion and delegates will be encouraged to interact fully with tutors in the case based discussions, quizzes and practical. The combined talents and practical experiences of a group of practice and niversity-based equine clinicians, of vast experience in this field, along with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, will stimulate delegates to assimilate knowledge on, and to discuss, the diagnosis and most effective treatment of the various soft tissue orthopaedic injuries in the horse and pony.
