Feline medicine - Approach to Infectious Diseases of the Cat

After graduating from the University of Reading in 1994 with a BSc in Animal Science, Sheila went on to study veterinary medicine at the University of London, graduating in 1998. Sheila then spent five years in general practice before undertaking a Residency in Feline Internal Medicine (funded by the Feline Advisory Bureau) at the University of Bristol. During her three years at Bristol, Sheila successfully obtained her RCVS CertSAM and following her Residency joined Great Western Referrals in Swindon as their small animal medicine clinician. In 2007 Sheila joined the Animal Health Trust as the Head of Small Animal Medicine and she is currently studying for her ECVIM Diploma having successfully passed the first part of this examination.
Course content

Interest in feline medicine has grown enormously over the last 10 years and many cat owners (and breeders) expect their veterinarian to have an excellent knowledge of feline infectious diseases. This one day course will focus on the approach to the wide variety of infectious diseases that may present to the veterinarian in general practice. A practical approach to assessment, diagnosis and management of upper respiratory tract infections, infectious GI disease, FIP and retrovirus infections will be covered in detail. Emerging infectious diseases together with important zoonotic diseases will also be covered.

 

Who should attend;

This course is aimed at the small animal practitioner who has a regular feline caseload. This will be an informal day of lectures with case based discussion (provided by the speaker and the delegates) strongly encouraged to enhance the series of lectures.

  • The approach to infectious disease diagnosis and management in the cat
  • The diagnosis, management and prevention of feline infectious respiratory disease
  • The diagnosis and management of feline infectious GI disease
  • The assessment, diagnosis and management of FeLV and FIV infection
  • The pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of FIP
  • The diagnosis and management of Haemoplasma infection
  • Emerging infectious diseases and the implications of zoonotic disease
