Coping with the difficult anaesthetic - an update on recent advances

Kate White is an anaesthesia consultant working in the UK and Europe in private referral practices, pharmaceutical companies, and university departments. She also spends time in first opinion practices updating and training vets and nurses in anaesthesia and critical care. She is particularly keen to help improve the standards of anaesthesia and analgesia in the UK.

Course content
The aim of this lecture is to provide an up to date and comprehensive demonstration of safer anaesthesia in small animal practice with some new and novel ideas. The emphasis is on the recent developments with the central tenet of the day being the approach to the difficult and challenging case.

 

Who should attend:

 

This course is aimed at the veterinary surgeon wishing to update and improve the anaesthesia and critical care service they provide. It is particularly aimed at vets wishing to pursue further qualifications in surgery and anaesthesia.

  • Incorporate new drugs into their anaesthesia protocols
  • Devise and set up new analgesic regimes
  • Use and understand anaesthesia equipment properly
  • Become familiar with the latest devices, equipment and ideas

  • The pharmacology and clinical use of the newer anaesthetic drugs and adjuncts
  • Comprehensive and relevant monitoring equipment. What to choose and how it works
  • The advances being made in analgesia and analgesic drugs and modalities
  • Critical care techniques in the peri-operative period
  • How to formulate appropriate protocols for the difficult anaesthetic
  • How to cope with anaesthesia complications (and avoid them!)
